The North American Society for Exile Studies views as its primary area of scholarly inquiry the emigration resulting from the terror of Nazi Germany. Its objective is to promote an understanding of the complex issues resulting from exile such as displacement, professional, financial and emotional instability and problems of adaptation to a new cultural, political and linguistic environment. Moreover, it strives to recognize the emigrants’ enormous contributions in the areas of literature, film, the fine arts, philosophy as well as the social and natural sciences. In addition, the areas of inquiry include issues of remigration, long-time impact of exile on the next generation as well as a comparative view of different experiences of exile. Consequently, the Society emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches and encourages cooperation among scholars from disciplines beyond the traditional areas of exile studies (literature and political science).
The North American Society for Exile Studies works closely with its German counterpart, the Gesellschaft für Exilforschung. In addition, the Society organizes regularly held international conferences devoted to specific topics.
